Memories of Vegas
In my 20s, I often vacationed in Las Vegas, Nevada. I recall some great times in Vegas. I loved the free booze and being able to smoke cigarettes without feeling ashamed.
My game was blackjack. Gambling wasn’t my addiction, but it fit right in with my lifestyle. I drank, smoked, ate unhealthy food, rarely exercised, and I lived paycheck to paycheck. Despite all my bad habits, I was thoroughly unhappy.
I did not understand that I had created my unhappy life. Yes, you heard me right. I did not understand that I had chosen the job I disliked. I had chosen the dingy apartment where I lived. I had chosen my lousy car, my empty bank account, and my bad attitude.
My unhappy life seemed totally normal to me. After all, my friends and family were all in the same boat. My friends drank with me, complained with me, and were broke like me. We were just living life. Hoping one day that things would get better.
Then something changed.
I had a life changing experience. I won’t go into detail here, but I will say that the experience led me to read books by Wayne Dyer, Louise Hay, Napoleon Hill, and others. These authors shared a message I had not heard before. Their message was this, “What you focus on expands. Without a destination in life, you will drift aimlessly. Your inner thoughts manifest as your outer reality.”
These ideas were foreign to me. Of course I was put off. I was too good for these silly ideas. However, I was desperate, so I pressed on. I eventually came to understand that as a young person, I had mirrored the beliefs of my family, authority figures, and my peers, I was taught the following: money was scarce, the only way to get rich was to win the lottery, and college was for smart people. I had never considered that my beliefs were not actually mine. But it was true. I had absorbed others’ thoughts as my own.
My limiting beliefs were hidden inside my subconscious mind. Although hidden, my beliefs had been shaping my entire life. I believed in scarcity, so I manifested scarcity. I believed college was for smart people, so I never finished college. I believed life was difficult, so I created difficultly.
Change your thinking and you will change your life.
Over time, I came to understand that by changing my thoughts, I could reprogram my subconscious mind. I learned that I could create a life of ease, wealth, health, passion, and happiness. And I have.
I gave up alcohol, cigarettes, and unhealthy food immediately. When I gave up alcohol and cigarettes I had no reason to visit Las Vegas, so I stopped gambling. I took up hiking, cycling, weight lifting, and I even began flying airplanes. I had lots more money when I replaced my unhealthy habits.
Ask yourself this, if you are not in charge of your life, who is? It’s a rhetorical question, because the fact is, we are all in charge of our own lives, whether we believe it or not. If you want to quit gambling, or change any area of your life, don’t see yourself as a non-gambler, because that’s a negative thought.
See yourself as an investor, or an entrepreneur, or whatever it is that fills you with passion. When I quit smoking, I didn’t see myself as a non-smoker, I visualized myself as a healthy person. I turned the negative into a positive. A healthy person would never inhale smoke into their lungs. An investor would never risk their money playing a game of chance.
Change your thinking and you will change your life. If you’re thinking that my suggestion is too easy to be true. Try it as an experiment. Pay attention to your thoughts. When you think a negative, or limiting thought, immediately replace it with a positive thought. Focus on what you desire. Don’t focus on what you don’t want. Why? Because what you focus on expands!
Still don’t believe me. Look around you. Every building, every car, every invention began with a thought. No exceptions! Do you think you are the exception? That’s illogical. Trust me on this. I totally turned my life around, and you can too!
We are all creators, whether you believe it or not. You are creating you life.
